Lavrov: Nothing Is Happening in U.S.–Russia Relations

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday that although there is considerable positive rhetoric about the vast potential of U.S.–Russian relations, “nothing is happening” in practical terms.

After winning the 2024 U.S. presidential election, President Donald Trump reopened dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin and has repeatedly pledged to end the war in Ukraine, but a peace settlement remains elusive.

Lavrov added that the “good talk” about cooperation in areas such as technology and energy, among other projects, has so far produced no results, though Russia appreciates Trump’s initiative to engage in dialogue.

In a transcript of his remarks published by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov said in English to RT India: “Nevertheless, nothing is happening on the ground.”

Lavrov, who has served as foreign minister since 2004, described the dialogue with Moscow as following the same approach as during the tenure of former U.S. President Joe Biden.

He continued: “Apart from this ongoing dialogue, which is normal in relations between peoples and states, everything else follows the pattern that was set by President Biden.”

He added: “The sanctions imposed during his term remain in place. In addition, the Trump administration has taken its own initiatives to penalize the Russian economy.”
